CANADA. February 15, 2017

Spirits Canada welcomes the very strong support of the European Parliament for the Canada European Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA).

“Canada is a relatively small domestic market and needs access to key foreign markets for like the EU for its goods and services”, said Jan Westcott, President & CEO of Spirits Canada. “Building on the bilateral 2004 Canada-EU Wine & Spirits Agreement, CETA will benefit both Canadian consumers with the elimination of certain tariffs on EU-originating Spirits and Canadian manufacturers who gain greater certainty on market access, labour mobility, and regulatory cooperation”, added Mr. Westcott.

Members of the European Parliament voted on February 15th overwhelmingly in favour of CETA with 408 for, 254 against, and with 33 abstentions.

At the same time Bill C-30, Canada’s own CETA implementation legislation, passed 3 rd Reading in the House of Commons on February 14 th and is expected to be reviewed by Canada’s Senate shortly.
